Halloween Math Activities for the 4th Grade Classroom

As an experienced teacher, I know first-hand how challenging it can be to come up with fresh and engaging Halloween math activities. I think Halloween brings some additional challenges to the upper elementary classroom:

Challenges
  1. Distractions: Students can find focusing on their studies more challenging.
  2. Cultural sensitivity: Halloween is a holiday with cultural and religious associations. Some students and their families may not celebrate or may have objections to certain aspects of the holiday. I try to be aware of this and ensure that their teaching is respectful and inclusive of all students.
  3. Age-appropriate content: I’m mindful of the age-appropriateness of my teaching materials and activities, particularly if they involve Halloween imagery. I always ensure anything used is in line with school policies and guidelines.

It’s a time of year that I’ve generally covered the four operations and place value and so I focus Halloween math activities on reviewing and reinforcing these math concepts.

Here are some activities I use for my 4th Grade students that maintain the fun of this holiday whilst accommodating the challenges!

Reviewing Concepts

1. Math Word Problems

Math word problems are a great way to help students apply their knowledge in context. I find Halloween is a great time to use math word problems as students are engaged in seasonal learning. They are a perfect review tool! The multi-step word problems below use all four operations and the area model multiplication word problems are a great way to support long multiplication skills.

2. Place Value Patterns

Another key foundation skill in math is place value and how value changes. I find Halloween is a great time to review how multiplying by powers of ten changes the value of a number. For my students, it’s a key mental math skill and the more I can get them to practice the better.

The resource below is a Halloween place value activity that aims to help students understand the base 10 number system, and that each place value position is 10 times greater than its place to the right. The products in each table have been designed to demonstrate the movement you would see in a place value chart.

Halloween Math Games and Puzzles

Math Mazes and Four in a Row

Halloween is such a fun time of the school year so it’s the perfect opportunity to use games and puzzles. When distraction can be higher, math games are often more engaging and motivate students to practice math concepts. It’s a great opportunity for students to collaborate in their math learning.

I also love the active learning element of math games, which helps improve retention and develop critical thinking skills. Finally, I love how math games and puzzles can be used to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of diverse learners. All of the resources below are adapted to different levels of difficulty or support.

Halloween Math Crafts

I do use Halloween math crafts in my classroom. I look for a purposeful Halloween math activity to use and often turn student work into a display. What I love about Halloween math craft:

  1. Hands-on learning: Math crafts provide hands-on learning. They allow students to use their creativity and imagination while applying math skills and knowledge.
  2. Multi-sensory experience: This is a powerful teaching tool for any age! Math crafts engage multiple senses, which can improve learning and retention.
  3. Cross-curricular connections: Math crafts can be used to connect math concepts to other subjects, such as art or science. They can help students see the relevance and applicability of math concepts in real-life situations.

Have a look on my pinterest page, I have a number of Halloween math boards to explore which include craft activities. A good board to start with is HALLOWEEN MATH 4TH GRADE.

Digital Task Cards

Digital Task Cards are a fantastic resource for students and teachers alike! One platform that I would highly recommend is Boom Learning (free and paid options available). I often use these with students and they really do love them. Here are some of the benefits:

  1. Interactive Learning Experience: Boom Cards provide an interactive and engaging learning experience for students. They include features such as drag-and-drop, multiple-choice, and fill-in-the-blank activities.
  2. Self-Paced Learning: Boom Cards allow students to work at their own pace and receive immediate feedback on their progress. This helps students take ownership of their learning and can increase their confidence and motivation.
  3. Easy to Use for Teachers: Boom Cards require minimal prep work and grading is done automatically. I’ve assigned Boom Cards as homework, assessments, or independent practice.
  4. You can track student progress and performance. This automated tracking saves a lot of time!
